UV-curable hotmelt pressure-sensitive adhesives (UV-HM PSAs) are a key modern technology in the production of self-adhesive films for Large Format Printing (LFP) media. They bridge the gap between traditional solvent-based acrylic adhesives, water-based acrylics, and standard rubber hotmelts. UV Hotmelt Technology in Ikonos Factory will positively influence the whole large format printing media industry.

How UV Hotmelt Technology Works

  1. Application: The adhesive—typically an acrylic-based polymer with photoinitiators—is heated to a flowable state and coated directly onto a flexible film face stock or release liner.
  2. UV Cross-Linking: Immediately after coating, the film passes under high-intensity UV lamps. The UV light triggers chemical cross-linking within the acrylic polymer chains, creating a durable, cohesive network.
  3. Cooling & Converting: The film cools instantly without requiring long drying tunnels or chemical aging periods, making it immediately ready for slitting, spooling, or lamination.

LFP Benefit
Coating Thickness
Precise laydown control from thin films up to thick coatings Ideal for heavy-duty graphic films (e.g., wall wraps, floor graphics, rough surface films).
Environmental Impact
100% solids formula; zero VOCs, no organic solvents, low energy consumption.
Complies with strict environmental standards (e.g., REACH) and eliminates solvent recovery systems.
Footprint & Speed
Compact machinery footprint; no drying ovens needed.
Highly scalable production with drastically lower capital expenditure on factory space.
Temperature Resistance
Cross-linked polymer structure withstands high temperatures
Prevents adhesive shrinkage or shear failure during hot lamination or under direct outdoor sunlight.
Chemical & UV Stability
Acrylic base provides intrinsic resistance to UV yellowing and weather aging.
Extended outdoor life for vehicle wraps, outdoor banners, and window graphics.

Relevance to Large Format Printing (LFP)

  • Controlled Tack and Removability: By tuning the UV dose, manufacturers can precisely dial in properties ranging from permanent high-tack adhesion to low-tack, removable, or repositionable graphics.
  • Substrate Compatibility: Works effectively with delicate or heat-sensitive substrates (like thin PVC, monomeric/polymeric vinyls, or eco-friendly PP/PET alternatives) because thermal exposure during coating is minimal compared to hot drying tunnels.
  • Low Oozing/Bleed: UV cross-linking ensures high cohesive strength, preventing adhesive build-up along roll edges (telescoping) and preventing blade fouling during plot-cutting or CNC converting.
